- The prototype Neil features a thinner face, a slightly smaller chassis, and brighter "S & M 2" lettering on his tank.
- Neil features a a dome, despite not having one in his appearances. This feature possibly represents his safety valve.
- Neil's funnel is wooden, despite all other vehicles at the time having plastic ones.
- Neil always had painted eyes, even when most other engines at the time still did not.
- This makes him the first character without an embedded face to be introduced with painted eyes.
- Neil never had a cab ledge despite being introduced when most other characters at the time still did.
- Neil, Lady, Millie, Scruff, and Logan are the shortest engines by length in the Wooden Railway range.
